September 27, 1840 ?C December 7, 1902,Illustrator Thomas Nast was the first American celebrity cartoonist, famous for helping to turn out New York corrupt politicians and for creating peristent iconographic images of Santa Claus. Nast, from a family of German immigrants, began working in New York City as a cartoonist at the age of 15. He had a long association with Harper Weekly (1861-86), during which his battlefield illustrations and skilled caricatures made him famous in the U.S. and abroad (Van Gogh was a collector). Nast was an opinionated, progressive Republican, and his illustrated attacks on the leader of New York Democrats, William Boss Tweed, are said to have helped bring down an era of government corruption. One of the most influential caricaturists of his time, he is credited with creating the image of Santa as a chubby fellow in a red suit. Nast also came up with the image of an ass to represent Democrats (around 1870) and an elephant to represent Republicans (1874). His popularity waned in the 1880s, and he parted ways with Harper Weekly over political and artistic differences. Failing to succeed with his own publication or as a painter, he managed to be appointed by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1902 to a diplomatic position in Ecuador, where he contracted yellow fever and died. Flemish painter , 1554-Rome 1626 were brothers, both born in Antwerp, who were landscape painters who worked in Rome after earning papal favor. They are also described as painters of capricci (whims or fancies) or vedute ideate or veduta di fantasia, with typical rustic hills with a few ruins. Mattheus began work on several frescoes in Rome from 1570 onwards, and his work includes the Vatican's Seasons. Mattheus died young, and his brother continued his work around 1574. Paul, a student of Damiaen Oertelmans, painted frescoes such as the landscapes in the Casino Rospigliosi (Rome), and The Roman Forum, which showed this site for what it had become: a slum for squatters and pasture for livestock (so much so that the place was nicknamed Campo Vaccino, or "The Cowfield"). His masterpiece may be a fresco in the Clementine Hall of the Vatican. Paul also did engravings and small cabinet paintings on copper, some of which are signed with a pair of spectacles (a pun on the French word brilles, "spectacles"). Some of these were collaborations with Johann Rottenhammer, who according to a dealer's letter of 1617 painted the figures in Venice and then sent the plates to Rome for Bril to complete the landscape. He collaborated with his friend Adam Elsheimer, who he both influenced and was influenced by, on one painting.
BARRA, Didier
French painter (b. 1590, Metz, d. 1644, Napoli French painter, active in Italy. He was for a long time confused with FRAN?OIS DE NOM?, and the work of both artists was thought to be by a Mons? Desiderio, a 'highly praised painter of perspectives and city scenes' (de Dominici). It is now generally accepted that Mons? Desiderio was the pseudonym of Didier Barra (1982 exh. cat.), son of Cl?ment Barra. Didier Barra left Metz probably c. 1608, when his name appeared for the last time in the city archives. From c. 1630 he was active in Naples, where he came into contact with landscape and townscape painters from northern Europe. De Dominici wrote that he was associated with Belisario Corenzio. The point of departure in reconstructing Barra's oeuvre is the Panoramic View of Naples (Naples, Mus. N. S Martino), which is signed and dated Desiderius Barra ex civitate Methensi in Lotharingia, F. 1647. The picture is a precise and panoramic view of Naples from the sea, from a single viewpoint, enriched by lively brushwork and with spirited scenes of shipping in the foreground. Its topographical precision suggests that Barra was influenced by the engravings of large views of Naples made by Alessandro Baratta ( fl 1629-30), and he may himself have trained as a cartographer. On the basis of this picture, several views of Naples have been attributed to Barra.
